Hello SAVMA Members,

Attached you will find an application for the "Communicating Diversity

Within Veterinary Medicine Grant" established by the Integrative

Communications and Diversity Committee.  Our goal is to enhance

communication and diversity awareness in the veterinary field through

promoting activities and opportunities for the students and/or public.

Up to five grants ranging from $250-$500 will be given to deserving

individuals or groups who host a diversity based activity with a

communication component for the student body or public.  If awarded the

grant follow up must include pictures from the event unless previously

submitted with the application.  In order to qualify for the grant, no

fundraising component can come from the activity.  If possible, please

include any notes, posters, or pamphlets given at the event.  All essays

are due March 1st 2015.

PHCOC Disaster Preparedness Grant

Disaster and emergency preparedness and response are important issues to

the AVMA. Animals are impacted by the same disasters and emergencies as

humans - natural, manmade, large, and small. Whether it's a hurricane or

tornado, a flood or an earthquake, a chemical leak or an act of terrorism,

veterinarians are vital to response and recovery efforts during and after

disasters.

The application is due on March 6th, 2015. If you have any questions,

please email Sarah Lothrop (lothrop@iastate.edu). All applications should

PHCOC Disaster Preparedness Grant

The SAVMA John Pitts Award for Distinguished Service:

Every year, the SAVMA President recognizes one veterinary student that has gone above and beyond in service and dedication to the veterinary profession.  The Award is open to ANY veterinary student who is a member in good standing within the Student AVMA.  The awardee will receive round-trip airfare as well as lodging and registration to SAVMA Symposium 2015 in beautiful St. Paul, Minnesota, March 19-21, 2015.  The award will be presented to the student during the Saturday evening (March 21) closing Gala.

Nomination Details:  

1. Due Friday, February 13, 2015 at 5:00pm CST

2.  A well-written essay not more than 2 pages in length.  Use standard font (Arial, Times New Roman, or similar) at 12-pt size, spacing at 1.5, standard margins.  The file should be in .doc, .docx, or .pdf format.

3. LIST at the top of the first page the name and contact information of the individual being nominated, the veterinary school of attendance, and the name(s) and contact information of the individual(s) submitting the nomination.

4.  The essay should address specific examples of the student's service and dedication, and demonstrate how those examples have contributed to the betterment of veterinary medicine.

5.  Submit the nomination to RAKarkula@cvm.tamu.edu by the due date above with the subject line "John Pitts Award".

6.  The awardee and nominating individuals will be notified by email and/or phone call in late February to allow the awardee ample time to plan their trip to SAVMA Symposium 2015.

A message from AWHAB Committee:

Is your club/group planning to host a lecture on a topic related to animal welfare and/or the human animal bond? If so, we have the perfect grant opportunity! The AWHAB lecture grant is meant to provide clubs planning such events $250 scholarships. Applications are quick and easy to fill out!

The AWHAB committee offers a 2nd grant opportunity to recognize projects that meet the following criteria:

• Present a sustainable and/or far-reaching project that demonstrates clear benefit to the humans and animals involved
• Enhance the education of veterinary students in tangible ways (i.e. providing more clinical experience, client interaction, etc.)
• Provide a platform for veterinary professionals to be involved meaningfully in the local community
• Benefit as many SAVMA members as possible. Not intended to fund individuals.

EPDC Extracurricular Funding Grant

Do you have a club and big ideas, but no funding?  Good news!  The Educational and Professional Development Committee is now accepting applications for the EPDC Spring 2015 Extracurricular Funding Grant. This grant is an amazing opportunity for groups/clubs to earn $200 of funding to help with a lecture/wet lab/event. The deadline for this application is March 6th 2015.  Please find the application attached to this e-mail.  For questions regarding the grant please contact Vaughn Fish (vafish10@vetmed.wsu.edu), but please SUBMIT application to SAVMA.EPDC@gmail.com. Community Outreach Teaching Excellence Award

The award is intended for students to publicly acknowledge how faculty members, clinicians, and others engaged in the veterinary field have gone above and beyond their responsibilities to interact and make a difference in the local and/or global community as a servant leader. 

The winner will receive $300, complete funding for travel expenses to the SAVMA Symposium in 2015, and an official award that will be presented to them publicly at the farewell dinner during SAVMA symposium. Also, the author of the winning application will receive $125!

Economic Issues Essay Contest

I am pleased to be sending out the Economic Issues Essay Contest prompt for this year from the Education and Professional Development Committee. There are two $250 awards. The essay prompt is a great way to start thinking about how to increase feline traffic at your veterinary clinic, as well as possibly winning some money! Please forward to the students at your school. 

 Submissions are due by Monday, January 5th, 2015.

Vet Gazette Logo Competition and Call for Submissions!

The Vet Gazette is beyond excited to announce our next creative endeavor!!  

Do you love coming up with new ideas? Are you good with graphic design or illustration? We want YOU, our SAVMA members, to design a logo for The Vet Gazette!!!!

We are offering $200 to the winning design that will be displayed on our website and on our Facebook page as the permanent profile picture.  Right now you’re probably wondering, “What should I create?” That’s for you to decide! All we at TVG ask is that the design incorporates SAVMA. I know that seems vague, but that’s exactly the point! We want you – our SAVMA members – to decide what The Vet Gazette means and how our logo should look.   

The final winner will be selected by the House of Delegates at the University of Minnesota SAVMA Symposium, March 2015.

Design submissions will be due at the same time as all other submissions for the next Vet Gazette edition due on December 30^th.  This gives you two months including winter break to create something amazing! Go forth and create!!

It’s also time for the next round of submissions for The Vet Gazette, a blog style publication run by the Student American Veterinary Medical Association (SAVMA) and written entirely by veterinary students.  Check it out at www.thevetgazette.com.  This email is a call for you to submit something to be published!

We’d love to hear about your work! Send us your case report or research abstract - pictures are highly encouraged! The author of the best submission will receive $100; 2 honorable mention recipients are awarded $20 each.

2.     Creative Corner: (your artwork, photos, poetry, and other artistic/creative works) we welcome all arts, limited only by your imagination, and not necessarily vet-school-related. Please title your piece, or if you wish, specify “Untitled.”  If submitting images, please limit yourself to a maximum of three. The creators of the four best submissions each receive a $50 prize.

3.     Foot in Mouth Disease: Laughter is the best medicine, so share your funny experiences, jokes, poems, photos, or more with us! In this category, anything goes. The funniest submission will receive $50; 2 honorable mention recipients are awarded $20 each.

4.      Life as a Vet Student: Winter break and the holiday season are just around the corner! Does this time of year bring back any memories for you? Dog snag the Thanksgiving turkey? Cat topple over the Christmas tree? Make your dad ill with "vet stories" you assumed were ok dinner convo? We want to hear about it! The author of the best submission will receive $100; 4 honorable mention recipients are awarded $20 each.

5.     Trivia:  Before receiving a veterinary degree from Cornell in 1984, this large animal veterinarian was a child star in an iconic movie centered around a chocolate factory. Can you guess who it is? Please send us your answer!   Two winners with the correct answers will be randomly selected and awarded $20.

6.     Experiences: Tell us about some of your best experiences- vet related or not- that have been a meaningful part of your veterinary experience. This could include vacations, externships, employment opportunities, extracurricular activities, and more. How have they helped shape your unique path to a DVM or VMD? Photos encouraged with entries!  The author of the two best submissions will receive $50; 2 honorable mention recipients are awarded $20 each.

8.     Overall Awards: The individual with the overall best submission will receive an additional $100. The SCAVMA chapter with the most submissions will receive $200.

9.     Op-ed pieces and letters to the Editor: Op-Ed The Vet Gazette is now accepting opinion articles on any topic.  Please limit submissions to articles written exclusively for The Gazette and not submitted to other publications. The topic is of your choosing, and you make decide to cover a subject that is not addressed in other areas of The Gazette, or make an argument that may disagree with an opinion held by others. In fact, opinions that contrast with those already presented in The Gazette are encouraged.  Feel free to include graphics, illustrations or photos that support your point.  Pieces will be chosen by their strength of writing and timeliness of topic, as well as relevance to the veterinarycommunity.   Letters to the Editor You may also submit a letter to the Editor, which should be written in response to a submissionmade to the most recent issue of The Vet Gazette (articles will be limited to those written in response to submissions published within the previous quarter).  Letters that will be selected for publish may elaborate on the pros and cons of a certain submission, and may be in support or against a particular editorial announcement (look for posts from SAVMA committees or tagged as SAVMA News as a source for your letters).

SAVMA Public Health and Community Outreach Committee Grant

The SAVMA Public Health and Community Outreach Committee awards eight $500 stipends each year to SAVMA members who reach out to populations that are underserved in terms of veterinary care.

Four of these stipends will be awarded to SCAVMA members who meet the requirements for an externship carried out between September 1st 2014 and January 31st 2015. Members of our committee will review each application submitted and make a decision based on the application's merit. Once four stipends have been approved, there will be no more available until the next period (i.e. February 1st 2015 to August 31st 2015) when four more stipends will become available.

The stipends are paid in a reimbursement fashion and are not guaranteed (i.e. the stipend is contingent on the successful applicant fulfilling the stated requirements). However, if an application is approved and the  requirements are subsequently fulfilled, the successful applicant will be awarded the stipend within 30 days of the committee receiving all necessary documentation after completion of the externship.

Stipends may be used to reimburse the student for expenses directly associated with service to an underserved population, including but not necessarily limited to travel, housing, and supplies associated with the service.

Get together a team of up to 12 players (minimum 8 players) and come play some kickball! This is a friendly tournament pitting Med students vs. Vet students! All proceeds will be going to charity, with this year's charity of choice being the JOSH project!

Women In Medicine's 5K run will be the same morning and ending on campus at SGU, so we will have both food and drink ready early for all those runners who want to stay and play kickball as well as runner who want to continue the fun as spectators.

Come out to enjoy a home cooked Thanksgiving dinner! If you bring a side dish that can feed 8-10 people you can eat turkey for free! If you would like to cook a turkey, sign up on the sheet that SCAVMA class reps will be passing around. If you cook a turkey, you and one other guest will get in and not have to bring a side dish :)

Date Auction News

We want to give a tremendous THANK YOU to every person who came out to the Date Auction last Friday, your participation was overwhelming and I hope you all had a great time! It was so much fun hearing the bidding and seeing the camaraderie amongst terms, classmates, and friends.

We also want to give a special Thank You to all the students, professors, and local businesses who contributed to tonight's auction. We had an unbeilevable number of dates submitted this year making the event very exciting! 

Please keep an eye on your emails if you won any of the silent auction items as the contact information will be emailed to you soon...an most importantly, we were able raise over 15,000 EC this year!

Save the Date - 2015 SAVMA Symposium

The 2015 SAVMA Symposium will be hosted by the University of Minnesota on March 19 - 21, 2015 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Downtown Minneapolis. The SAVMA Symposium Planning Committee is hard at work scheduling speakers, wetlabs and fun activities and night events. Registration for the Symposium will begin in November. SAVMA House of Delegates meeting to be held March 19 & 20, 2015 from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. SCAVMA Presidents meeting to be held March 21, 2015 from 8 a.m. - 12 p.m. Be on the lookout for updates on the SAVMA Symposium Facebook page and keep checking back on the 2015 SAVMA Symposium website at www.savmasymposium2015.com for the most up to date details and information on how to register!
